June’s Member of the Month is Nicole Johnson, Director of Marketing and Communications for Innovate Marquette Smart Zone and Invent@NMU.
Nicole was able to get involved in Connect Marquette through her work she does at Innovate Marquette and Invent@NMU. She enjoys connecting with people from all walks of life. Creative people, analytical ones, and especial those she can learn from.
When asked what her CM membership does for her, Nicole replied, ” My membership allows me access to networking and professional development opportunities in Marquette and the greater U.P. In my 7 years working in digital marketing and content development, the most important aspect of growth has been mentorship and networking, which can be really tough when you’re new in town as well as during a pandemic! My membership has allowed me to grow both my professional network here in Marquette as well as my inner circle.
When asked what her favorite hobbies are she replied ” I love being by the water. Walking on the beach picking up rocks and beach glass is one of my favorite activities, there are literally jars of rocks all over my house. My partner and I love to go on long hikes to different lakes and streams to set up a hammock. He fishes and I read or write and take photos. In the winter I love to ski, down hill or cross-country, and experiment with cooking, especially soups. Yoga and gardening are definitely my happy place! Cooking with fresh herbs and a good bottle of wine is just good for the soul.”
Nicole’s favorite thing about the Marquette community is the energy. “Marquette is a gritty community of innovators and outdoorsmen blended with art and rich history and welcoming culture. There’s a real sense of community. Walking down the street you’re guaranteed at least three people will say hello. I’ve had many work meetings outside and will continue to do so. Not to mention, it’s acceptable to wear flannel on every occasion. In Marquette you can really just be you, and there’s something special about that.”
