My wife and I are both from Negaunee and we have lived in the U.P. for most of our lives. When we moved to Marquette a few years ago I wanted to get more involved with community events by participating, volunteering, or just showing up to check things out. Connect Marquette provided the perfect opportunity for that!

I enjoy being a member of Connect Marquette because it provides the opportunity to meet interesting people and participate in a variety of fun events, including some family friendly events. My daughter learned how to ski at the Blueberry Ridge cross country ski event last year and we are so thankful to have started a lifelong family activity because of it!

    Hannah Syrjala

Interim Executive Director |Superior Child Advocacy Center

Legal Secretary | Marquette County Prosecutors Office

I’m a member because the Advocacy Center is incredibly important to me, and being a part of Connect Marquette allows for greater visibility in Marquette County. Positive change takes place through action, and this organization is overflowing with people who are willing to take action to make changes for the betterment.  Part of my objective at the Advocacy Center is to inform the community at large how critical this Center is to the safety and protection of our community’s children. I’m cognizant that I need to reach outside of my own little bubble to help other organizations in this community thrive; it’s hard to know what places need or want help or exposure. However, with being wrapped up in the needs of my own projects this organization helps provide exposure to other causes.

Marquette has always been a community that takes care of its own, and I’m very proud to be a part of that. I’m excited to take this opportunity in my capacity as a community liaison for the Prosecutor’s Office. Specifically, community outreach and communication is important and celebrating victories and realizing efforts is important to me. I’m more than happy to raise awareness and discuss how we can provide a solution for issues that impact us.

I’m new and Connect Marquette provides me with opportunities for growth, both personal and professional. There is no better group of people to be connected with than the people here. As the old adage says: many hands make light work!

I am originally from East Los Angeles and have a strong desire to further build a socially and economically stronger community for the next generation.  I joined Connect Marquette two years ago because as a post graduate student I learned the high value of community engagement and partnership.

I have found that the relationships and activities I have been able to participate in through Connect Marquette have continued to benefit me personally as a single mother, a student, and now socially. I learn new skills in relation to investing in the relationships of citizens and people in leadership positions. The organization help integrate unique ideas and a positive energy that everyone brings to the community.

With Connect Marquette I hope to be able to learn more about what is important for the community to be addressed, what services are needed and what I can do to help give back to my community.

I joined Connect Marquette almost a year ago after living away for four years. When I moved back to the area a lot of the people I knew had relocated for careers, and I really wanted to meet new people that know how special this community is. Through Connect Marquette, I have had the opportunity to meet a slew of different professionals all doing things to better our community, and to me, that was reason enough to stay involved. On top of that, Connect Marquette has also provided me with opportunities to get more involved in the community so I can help keep it amazing.

The biggest thing my membership does for me is that it allows me to meet new people. In my line of business, I meet a lot of people but rarely have the time to get to know their stories. I am fascinated by what people do for work and the great impact it has, and this group provides the environment to learn that.

I joined Connect Marquette seven years ago when I moved back to the Marquette area.  Most of my friends were scattered across the country and I was looking to meet new people.  I continued to renew my membership because I have gotten to know most of the active members and enjoy spending time socializing with them.  I would like to network with more of the general membership through events hosted by Connect Marquette!

My membership also gives me the opportunity to experience a side of Marquette County that I wouldn't have access to otherwise.  For example, a few of my favorite events have been sailing with the Marquette Yacht Club, touring the historic sites in Park Cemetery with the Marquette History Museum, taking golf lessons at Greywalls, and volunteering to clean up Mattson Lower Harbor Park.   If there is an event you are interested in seeing, be sure to attend an events committee meeting so we can make it happen!

I joined Connect Marquette because my wife, Jasmine was getting a membership. She wanted to join and asked me to as well, so I agreed. As I started getting into it I realized that meeting people from other industries is a positive benefit for me. Not just on a professional level, but a personal level as well. It’s cool that I am able to interact with people whom I may normally never meet, had I not joined Connect Marquette.
My membership in Connect Marquette has opened the door to potential new clients, and even a new hobby I didn’t know I wanted. The membership also opens up new opportunities both professionally and personally. My membership allows me as an introvert to attend a social/networking event with no outside pressure to meet people, while simultaneously giving me the opportunity to meet others.

When I moved to Marquette a little over two years ago, I was eager to meet new people and build social and professional connections. I got really excited when I heard about Connect Marquette through a colleague of mine - it was exactly what I was looking for! I'm impressed by the number of volunteer and career development opportunities the organization provides, and the membership reflects a wide range of fields and local employers.
Being a member of Connect Marquette offers me countless opportunities to grow as a human and professional in the city I've been lucky to call home. The professional aspect speaks for itself, but the organization also shines as a way for it members to network, collaborate, and plant the seeds for the future. Our city, being as tight-knit as it is - is full of vibrancy and energy, and I see that growing year after year. That being said, it takes a concerted effort to channel that energy and turn it into something tangible that can leave a lasting mark as we continue to evolve and grow as a community.  Connect Marquette is doing that, and that makes me smile.

    April Cote

    Program Manager

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly

    Upper Michigan Office

I joined Connect Marquette because I wanted the opportunity to be able meet professionals in the area with similar interests and passions, such as community focused peers. I am an introvert and it can be difficult for me to meet people both in social and professional settings. When I learned about the organization, I thought it was the perfect way to help me in this area!
My membership gives me a bigger sense of community that I absolutely lacked prior to joining. I work in an elderly based non-profit with only one other employee at our local office, so meeting outside professionals isn’t easy. Having joined Connect Marquette I feel like I am part of a much larger group of professionals and much more connected to the community that I love so much. I have found my place here in the community. This is possible because I joined Connect Marquette.
