June's Member of the Month is Nicole Johnson, Director of Marketing and Communications for Innovate Marquette Smart Zone and Invent@NMU.
Nicole was able to get involved in Connect Marquette through her work she does at Innovate Marquette and Invent@NMU. She enjoys connecting with people from all walks of life. Creative people, analytical ones, and especial those she can learn from.
When asked what her CM membership does for her, Nicole replied, " My membership allows me access to networking and professional development opportunities in Marquette and the greater U.P. In my 7 years working in digital marketing and content development, the most important aspect of growth has been mentorship and networking, which can be really tough when you’re new in town as well as during a pandemic! My membership has allowed me to grow both my professional network here in Marquette as well as my inner circle.
When asked what her favorite hobbies are she replied " I love being by the water. Walking on the beach picking up rocks and beach glass is one of my favorite activities, there are literally jars of rocks all over my house. My partner and I love to go on long hikes to different lakes and streams to set up a hammock. He fishes and I read or write and take photos. In the winter I love to ski, down hill or cross-country, and experiment with cooking, especially soups. Yoga and gardening are definitely my happy place! Cooking with fresh herbs and a good bottle of wine is just good for the soul."
Nicole's favorite thing about the Marquette community is the energy. "Marquette is a gritty community of innovators and outdoorsmen blended with art and rich history and welcoming culture. There’s a real sense of community. Walking down the street you're guaranteed at least three people will say hello. I’ve had many work meetings outside and will continue to do so. Not to mention, it’s acceptable to wear flannel on every occasion. In Marquette you can really just be you, and there’s something special about that."
May's Member of the Month is Ashley Ross, Creative and Community Coordinator at Campfire CoWorks!
Ashley was able to get involved with Connect Marquette through Campfire. She has had a lot of fun seeing how many members in the community are working towards similar goals. Entrepreneurship is much less intimidating with a community of like-minded people to share in the joys and difficulties with.
When asked what her CM membership does for her, Ashley replied, "For me, it's a motivation to get socially connected with my community. I don't generally feel comfortable in large groups, but hearing from other thought-leaders is a great boost and motivator."
Ashley loves being able to use Zoom for meetups because she can hop on while working or doing Mom things. She thinks makes it a little easier as a working parent.
Do you have any thing in common with Ashley? Her favorite hobbies outside of her profession include:
I'm a huge nerd. I love anime and cosplay. I've always loved costumes because you can become someone else for a day, but now I take it to the extreme. It's a very intense hobby. I also love to spend time with my family either adventuring, playing video games, or catching a movie.
We asked Ashley what her favorite community event or local organization was and she said, "I have really enjoyed going to the Women in Entrepreneurship nights put on by Innovate MQT and the Smartzone. When I first started my business, it was so impactful to be surrounded by so many other women in the community doing big things."
And when asked about her favorite thing about the Marquette community, Ashley shared, "I've always been impressed by the way it can just pull you in. My husband and I have thought to leave a few times, but we've never been able to do it. Just when I think that we need to raise our family somewhere else, an opportunity sucks us back in. As a kid, I complained about the limitations. Now I see that it is up to us to defy those and create a place that we can thrive in. It's too beautiful a place to say goodbye to just because you can't make a living. I see so much potential in the community of people trying to create a sustainable economy here. I want my children to feel like they can be successful here doing things they love and I believe we can do it together!"
Megan O'Connor is this month's Member of the Month. Megan is Outreach Coordinator at Lake Superior Community Partnership. When asked why she became a Connect Marquette Member, Megan replied:
"I’m apart of Connect Marquette to meet other young professionals. Being 23 and in my second year out of college, most of my friends are either still in college or have moved away. Connect Marquette provides me the opportunity to get to know people outside of my regular circle and form lasting professional relationships."
Megan believes her membership has helped her with other professionals and mentors.
Outsider of her profession, Megan sings for St. Peter’s Cathedral every Sunday, she is a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sister, volunteers around the community, loves yoga and skiing, and is currently enjoy learning about floral arranging. Her favorite community event is Beer Fest and Megan's favorite thing about the Marquette Community is the sense of togetherness. Megan said,
"Every time I walk into a business, I know someone or see a familiar face…. I feel like even strangers look out for me!"
